I've found that you don't have to spend a lot to add exercise to your life. I like running because you can push yourself for as long as you like and as hard as you like for free, whenever you want to take the time to do so. The only equipment cost is a pair of running shoes and time. The same holds true for tennis (a racket and a couple of balls), hiking and many other outdoor activities.
Another free option that is available in some city parks and urban areas are "fitness zones". In the City of Atlanta there are 12 city parks with manual workout equipment If you live near Perkerson Park, Coan Park or Washington Park in Atlanta check them out. The machines are set in a circuit and use one's own body weight to provide resistance to the manual trainers. Check with your local Parks & Rec departments to find out if any exist in your neighborhood. I intend to call to find the other 9 locations in Atlanta. City recreational centers may also offer free or low-cost gyms or classes. I have heard great things about $5 drop-in spin classes here.
Other options include meet ups (I've seen them for tennis, running, Zumba, yoga etc.), running clubs like BGR or those sponsored by local track clubs, drop in classes in local gyms or studios (they often range from $5-7/class, but many places offer a first class free option), and online deals through Groupon, Living Social, Amazon deals Sweet Jack and all of the other daily deals sites.
Some stores such as Athleta, Nike and Lululemon also host free fitness events including in-store yoga or boot camps and many running stores sponsor running clubs that use the store as a central location and run from there.
========================================================================
Monday
Goal: Boxing!
Outcome: I went. I felt like I ran 5 miles, I sweat, I got a great upper-body workout and I met some new people. Overall it is still a winner.
Hair: Ballerina bun - it survived.
Tuesday
Goal: Tennis or running. I have family in town, and tennis is something that we can do together. It's challenging, and it forces one to run, stretch, improve hand/eye coordination. I'm not very good at it, but I know that the more that I play, the better that I will be.
Outcome: My dad wanted to do yard work (yes on MY jungle/yard), so we did that...then I went running. I did 4m in about 45 minutes. I haven't run since that 15k, so I'm glad that I went, but I wish I had gone a little faster.
Hair: I pulled it back into a ponytail. It made it. I was soaked after running, so I washed, conditioned, and moisturized afterwards. My hair and scalp thanked me.
Wednesday
Goal: Running or Boxing. It depends on my dad. Likely boxing because I would like to try the "Women's Boxing Class" to see if it differs.
Outcome: I went to my boxing class (without my dad). We ran and punched the entire time, and I tried not to stop working, even when I got tired....but I had to pause when I was doing jumping jacks with a medicine ball and grab some lighter hand weights. It was crazy...I put up a photo on Instagram.
Hair: Modified Easy Elegance from the 2nd edition of the book. It held up well.
Thursday
Goal: Yoga. I keep saying I'm going, so I'm going.
New Goal: Zumba - I'm switching Zumba and Yoga.
Outcome: I went, but I stepped when I could have hopped. I walked when I could have leapt, and just didn't give it my all. I got a lot less out of Zumba than I have in the past, but you get out what you put in. I only went through the motions, so I didn't really accomplish anything healthwise.
Hair: I let it out. I didn't sweat much so there was no real impact to my hair, although it was strange to have it loose (ok in twists) while I danced around.
Friday
Goal: Zumba.
New Goal: Yoga
Outcome: Nada - glad I had two other opportunities to make my 5 days for the week.
Hair: N/A
Saturday
Goal: Run/hike - but it might just be (more) yard work.
Outcome: I had an extremely full day, and I started it with sleep, oversleeping, working on my hair, and painting my toenails!
Hair: Modified Whadyasay? from my e-book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways.
Sunday
Goal: Yoga (gentle).
Outcome: I didn't go to yoga, but I did go for a run. It was only about 2 miles, but I'm glad that I did something. There are still 2 more hours left in the day, and I might get in some calistenics, but I'm not making any promises!
Hair: I kept the same style as yesterday. It lasted through a rainy day of running, church, brunch, work, and hanging out today.
Overall I was less than excited about my performance this week. I didn't give it my all, but I'll give myself credit for doing something 5/7 days this week. And tomorrow I will start all over again! Check here for Week 1, Week 2 Week 3 and Week 4.
