It's My Brother's Birthday!

Happy Birthday to My Little Brother, he's a pretty private person, so I won't show you his face, and I won't tell you his nickname because he would tell you mine, and I'm not having that. I'll just leave it at this:

My brother, James, sported a beautiful head of locs for a few years. He and I were actually growing out our hair at about the same time, way back on 2006/2007. He cut those beautiful locs off about 3 years ago, but I'll put up a throwback photo....

He looked so handsome! If I find a good photo from the front, I'll put it up also.

Hair Update & It's My Sister's Birthday (Again)!!!

A year ago, exactly, I did a post on my sister, Nicola, in honor of her birthday. She had recently debuted her locs. Well it's that time of year again and her hair has grown, changed, and evolved over the past year...Her locs are growing and so have her styling options.

Last year's post was more about how she inspired me to learn how to style my hair when I was younger, but this year I decided to focus more on her hair and her routine. She is still my favorite [and only] big sister, and I still think she's pretty dope...but here's her hair story.

Brief hair history: My sister had relaxers from about the age of 10 until she was about 19. She had natural hair back when Lauryn Hill was first rocking an Afro, and was one of the first people I knew that ever tried to grow locs years and years ago.  If my memory serves, her hair took forever to loc, and I think she gave up.  Since then she has been relaxed, natural, big chopped, grown, braided, dyed, twa'd and many things in-between. It has now been about 13 months since she's become a loc-star...

How has your hair routine changed with locs versus without locs?

I don't do too much with it in terms of maintenance. I get it twisted (tightened) every other month, and I try not to get it immersed in water. Working out has made it challenging because it gets soaked, so that delays the locking process. It's different because it was kind of frustrating to work out with it [when it was loose and] natural because my twist outs would get loosened up and I would have to end up blow drying it, or if I had it loose, I would still have to blow dry and press it.

I use Sea Breeze astringent to clean my scalp because I don't want to wash it very often. So that's a big change, because I used to co-wash it every 3 days.

What are your favorite products?

I don't use very many products, I just occasionally oil my hair for a little sheen. I still co-wash with the same products I used before, just much less often. Fortunately I don't suffer from a dry scalp like I did before [when she wore her natural hair loose]. I've been trying to find the Jamaican Mango & Lime refreshing spray, but I may try to make my own with essential oils, water, and a carrier oil.

What is your maintenance routine?

If I wash it I will re-twist it (or tighten it) myself, but it isn't the same because I don't clip it up and separate it, I just twist with a little gel and sit under the dryer.

How much has your hair grown in the last year?

Well, I have tons of shrinkage and curly hair, so I can't really tell. Some pieces have grown more than others, but I know that it has all grown a lot because I can get it into a ponytail.

What are your favorite styles?

I did a lot of roller sets in the beginning but now I tend to pin up one side a lot, using a hair comb, or create a little faux-hawk, or do flat twists and pin them up and later have a curly twist-out, I do braid outs, and Bantu knot-outs.  I just had my hair done and my hair dresser (Renee at Anointed Hands of Glory in CT) does more intricate styles, and she added hair to form this bun. I think it shows the versatility of locs; you can do a lot of different styles. And now that I know that I can put my hair into ponytails, I have even more options, and I will likely do a two-ponytail variation in the future.

My only regret about locs is not doing it sooner. My Mother suggested it 4-5 years ago, but it took me until last year to do it.

Do you have any suggestions for those considering growing locs?

It's a commitment, and there is a period where you can't wash your hair at all. I think a lot of people get turned off at that point, but you still have the option of cleaning your scalp with astringents.

So cute! Reppin' for Jamaica & Guyana...

Natural: Dante' de Blasio

Have you guys been following the run for New York City Mayor? If you don't live in New York, you've probably been following it as closely as I have - which is not much more than hearing where Anthony Weiner stood in the polls.

Well I knew that Weiner lost the primary, but I didn't pay attention to who won. Earlier this week I saw a photo of President Obama shaking hands with a young man with a HUGE Afro, but it wasn't until I read the story that I really stopped and thought about the implications of that Afro.

The young man, Dante' de Blasio, is the 15-year-old son of Bill de Blasio, the winner of the Democratic primary and the Democrat's candidate for New York City Mayor. Apparently Dante's August advertisement for de Blasio served as a boon for his father's campaign. I've attached one of the videos here:

and a second video here (this one dealing more directly with NYC's controversial and questionable stop-and-frisk policy):

and here he is shaking hands with the President:

Dante's parents are telling the world that it is ok for him to wear his hair any and everywhere. Apparently the President appreciated his hair also, and purportedly even said that he had the same hairstyle back in 1978 - but that his wasn't as good because it was lopsided. With New York City being one of the influential cities in the US and in the world, the de Blasio's have put their son's Afro and Mrs. de Blasio's (Ms. Chirlane McCray) locks on the world stage - and told everyone that their natural hair is good enough as is.

Dante' said he has been wearing his Afro since the third grade, when he first fell in love with the style. His maintenance routine is pretty simple, 'I have to pick it out every day and I wash it every week and I get trimmed about once a month'.

What do you think? Would you have made Dante' cut his hair? Or did his parents allow it because he's only 15, or because it is a style that he's now worn for half of his life?

Hair Inspiration - Style Instructions

I try to gain hairspiration wherever I can find it, and I must say that when I saw this on Pintrest, I fell in love!
I haven't tried it yet, but I will...likely on stretched, lightly pressed, or even twisted hair. It should work with locs also. I imagine that the steps would include the following:

Image via viictoriiashea.tumblr.com

1. Separate the hair into three sections going across from the right to the left side of the head. Make the
middle section about half the size of the other two sections. You may wish to put the sections into ponytail holders until you are ready to work with the hair in that section.

2. Braid the front section toward the middle of the head, stopping at the part, and letting any excess hang. Add a ponytail holder, or pin the hair down, again allowing the excess hair to hang.

3. Braid the back section from the base of the neck toward the middle of the head, again stopping at the part and adding a pin or ponytail holder and allowing the excess hair to hang.

4. Finally form a bun with the middle section of hair, and incorporating the excess hair from the front and back sections. If the bun is not as full as you desire, feel free to add hair into your bun, and use your hair to cover the addition.

Do you think you'll try it?

Curls on the Street: Snoop Lion...

Snoop Lion sponsored the 1st Annual Celebrity Flag Football Game - Athletes vs. Cancer charity event this weekend along with Matt Barnes. He hung out with Rodney Peete and family and fans - even going so far as to give a little one the shirt off of his back. I commend Mr. Broadus on his charitable works, but I'm also interested in the progress of his hair.

His locs look as if they have finally taken, and to tell the truth, the look is growing on me. What about you?

Sunday style - August 4th

I tried a new style this morning...Friday I had a giant puff, and it carried me through work, exercise, sleep, travel, volunteering with kids, and a concert!!!

My sister made that mask for me....

My sister (@colarrich on Instagram) and me at the Riverfest....

But two days was the limit, and this morning when I woke up I had a solid, dry mass that needed to be detangled and moisturized.

Out came my big comb, flexirods, and Obia Natural Haircare line. I ended up with this:

Please excuse my niece....

I actually did two flat twists across the back of my head and towards my right ear. I two stand twisted the ends and rolled them. Then I did 5 flat twists going forward and rolled the ends - all toward the right. After about two hours I took the rollers out, and started arranging the curls toward the right. I ended up pinning the two flat twists across the front of my head, and again to the right. I was going to undo the ends of the flat twists, but when I saw that they curled, I didn't bother...

It was new, it was relatively quick - detangling took much more time than the flat twists!!! And it ended up looking church appropriate :) what do you think?

I did a video on Keek... http://www.keek.com/!THOQcab - and please excuse my niece and nephew in the background.

(Updated) NATURAL MEN: ESPN THE BODY ISSUE - PART I

Denver Nuggets' Forward, Kevin Faried may have made the cover of ESPN the Magazine's 5th Annual "The Body Issue". I think of the 23-year-old as a mere child, but the "Manimal" looks fully formed in his photos. The full edition of the issue will be on stands on July 12th. Look out for WNBA player Swin Cash (UCONN Alum), NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick (photos below), Driver Courtney Force, Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, and Ultimate Fighter Miesha Tate.

Back to Kevin - did you get the chance to admire his hair? The locs are beautiful! They look well maintained, but not overly styled (I personally don't like men's locs to look like they get them styled every two weeks - again, that's just me.)

New Day New 'Do: India Arie!

India Arie on Super Soul Sunday
NAACP Image Awards 2012
Headwraps have been part of India Arie's signature look for years. I've always appreciated the colorful cloths tied as turbans, wraps, and geles.  We knew that she wore locs because we saw them in 'Video', her first single. And sometimes we'd see the locs loose and flowing, and sometimes we saw the wraps.

I was surprised when she shaved her head, and I thought she looked ok, but I preferred the wraps or the locs. And last year she let us know that she was back to locs.

Now Ms. Arie is promoting her new album, Songversation, and she's been wearing headwraps in her promo shots, on her album cover, in interviews with Tavis Smiley, and on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday...but she released a photo last night of  her rocking her hair. It looks adorable!!!

Here it is:
