Five Wishes For Our Daughters

I don't have daughters, but I have three beautiful nieces with natural hair. They are growing up. And as they head back to school, I have some hopes and wishes for them and all little girls growing up with natural hair. I want them to:

1) Love their hair as it is, and not how others imagine it should be;

2) Never feel the need to change their hair in order to be accepted by society. I hope they know that they can have internships, careers, and significant others all while having natural hair;

3) Be surrounded by other naturals. I hope that they have enough friends, family, and local natural hair groups that they never feel alone;

4) Experience a world where all of their local stores stock supplies for natural hair; and

5) Know that natural hair is neither a political statement, nor a reason to judge or be judged for the decision to keep their natural hair textures.

I believe that as more and more generations of women grow up without relaxers, our daughters will be less and less burdened by other people's expectations for their hair. They won't have to "transition" or "go natural" - they'll have always been natural. They'll know that they can straighten their hair, but that they don't have to. Their hair texture will never be a shock, and hopefully never be a disappointment. My wishes are for all of them, and for all of us.
