That child is a beast! So the basic story goes like this: auditions were held to find a local child to star in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Despite Quvenzhane' being too young to audition, the minimum was six and she was only five, she and her Mom attended the audition anyway, and eventually got the role. The writer-director Benh Zeitlin was so impressed with her personality, that the script was modified to better reflect it in the story.

Fast forward, and now Quvenzhane is 9 years old and is the youngest actress ever nominated in the Best Actress category of the Academy Awards. The film has won prizes both at Cannes and Sundance, and is a critical success.
