How Does Exercise Make Your Hair Grow?

The other day I was able to go for a mid-day run because my jury duty assignment had ended and I used the time to exercise. It was really nice! The sun was shining, the temperature was pleasant, and there weren't too too many people on the road. While I ran, I thought about the ways that healthy eating can resolve hair issues...then I moved on to the link between hair and exercise.

One of the many benefits of exercise is stress reduction, and stress has been found to impact the condition of one's scalp. Apparently stress affects various hormones that make the scalp tighten and thin, and therefore makes the scalp more susceptible to hair loss.

Another major benefit of exercise is increased blood circulation. The increased blood circulation carries nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the body, including the scalp and its hair follicles. Running, swimming, walking or any type of cardio all help ensure healthy arteries and increase the body's efficiency and blood flow. In other words more exercise equals more blood flow & circulation equals stronger scalp and longer hair.

There are also inversion exercises designed to increase blood flow and circulation to the scalp. Inversion exercises use all parts of the body to produce movements that focus on the compression and shortening of joints, muscles and ligaments. And in that manner, they affect blood flow and circulation. The position of the exercises referenced below all serve to increase blood flow to the scalp. Links to beginner inversion exercises are provided, but please seek medical advise before attempting these at home:
Yoga: Crow pose, Headstand, Shoulder stand, Plow pose, Fish pose
Pilates: Roll over (which relates to several other inversion exercises)
Tai Chi:  Bend Over and Roll Up
Finally, although this may not be considered an exercise, scalp massage also helps to improve circulation. There are various oils (like Castor oil) and essential oils that can increase the effectiveness of the physical stimulation, but the rubbing alone will make an impact since massage again increases blood flow to the scalp. But don't abandon eating right, remaining hydrated, and exercise in favor of scalp massage alone. the effects of a good diet and exercise should ensure improvements in scalp and hair health.

Again, the more blood flow you get to your scalp and hair (whether through exercise or massage), the better your chances for hair growth and retention.
