Recipe: Make Your Own Detangler!

I've been treating my hair badly, as usual. But I may be getting worse. I realized yesterday that I have been really harsh with my hair when it comes time to detangle. And I'm starting to see a difference in the thickness of my ends....or should I say thinness. And although I know it is really about the fact that I've been trying to rush through the process with a wide toothed comb instead of finger detangling and taking my time. I'm on a quest to find a simple detangler recipe. Here are a few that I've seen.

Aloe Vera Gel Detangler
All you will need to do is combine the following ingredients in a spray bottle:

  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
  • 1-2 drops glycerin
  • 10 drops grapefruit seed extract
  • 1 teaspoon carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, olive, etc.)
To use this detangler, spray it on sections of your hair and detangle as usual. I modified the recipe from the following source.

I've seen similar recipes to the one above, and some have a total of 4 drops of glycerin, some don't include essential oils or carrier oils, but the basic premise is that if you add a small amount of aloe vera gel and glycerin to a cup of water, you will end up with a decent detangler.

Juice, No Gel?

  • 1/2 cup distilled or purified water
  • 1/2 cup aloe vera juice
  • 1-2 teaspoons of carrier oil of choice
Combine the mixture in a spray bottle, shake, and apply to hair in small sections prior to detangling.  Recipe inspired by source.

Finally, I've seen plenty of recipes letting us know that we have everything we need right on hand.

Detangling Conditioner
  • 1 cup water (distilled or purified if possible)
  • 1 teaspoon of your favorite conditioner
  • 1/2 teaspoon of your favorite carrier oil
Combine the mixture in a spray bottle, shake, and apply to hair in small sections prior to detangling.  Recipe inspired by source.
