I know that I have used the expression "Hair Envy" in the past, and yes I do love Teyonah Parris'hair (that reminds me! I am going to add her to my Naturals of the Week - 9/27 post right now)...but today I saw a head of hair that actually caused my stomach to contract with envy.
Envy: (v) (1)desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to (someone else). (2) desire for oneself (something possessed or enjoyed by another).
I love my hair or like it a lot, or at the very least I don't generally want to trade my hair in for someone else's. Even when I think the other person has a beautiful head of hair, I am generally unaffected. I see longer hair, thicker hair, curlier (versus knottier) hair, different colored hair, coilier hair, bigger hair, hair with cute cuts, hair with long dreadlocks or sisterlocks or twists, gorgeous buns, straighter hair - and I think - "oh, that's cute" or "oh, she's cute", or "oh well - my edges never look like that" or "I want to stick my hands in her puff/Afro" or when I see a pretty style, I think, "Can I recreate that?"...but for the most part I have never wanted my hair to do anything other than what it does. I've never yearned for [much] longer hair or [very] different hair (...I think we've all wished for some modifications sometimes - for me it usually happens when I am trying to get a comb through it, or fleetingly wishing that my edges would lay flat). I'm usually somewhere on the spectrum between fine and overall pleased with my extra-kinky, super-shrinky, long enough for my purposes, grey-streaked hair.
But alas, now I understand what "Hair Envy" really means! Yes I would rather have her hair than my own. I would, if possible, replace the stuff growing out of my head with her hair...yup, that's envy.
Who is she? Check out @Razorempress on Instagram, and apparently also on YouTube. What was it that caught my attention? I don't know why I love her hair so much. I saw her updo on @Nappyfu's Instagram feed and I admired her bun, and then I went to her photos! I think it was the sheer volume of her highly-textured hair that caught my eye....or maybe it was the updos? Or maybe it was the sudden thought - "Maybe I can get my hair to look (and grow) like that"?... Her texture didn't look SO different than mine, and my hair CAN grow longer than it is - If I put in some effort. All I know is that for probably the first time, I am seriously trying to figure out what I need to change in order to get my hair to look more like hers.
As long as it isn't all genetic - because if so, this is a goal that I will never achieve. For now, I will just try to keep my ends protected, maybe include more of the scalp and hair favorite foods into my diet, continue to exercise, add some scalp massage and castor oil to my routine, and possibly switch up or add a pre-natal to my vitamin mix.
