Natural Man: Jaden Smith Wants to be Emancipated

Will Smith gave a recent interview where he stated that Jaden has asked for the gift of freedom for his upcoming 15th birthday. By freedom I mean legal emancipation, where a minor is no longer under parental control, and can now be considered an adult for legal purposes (in most states) when entering into contracts, buying a home, or anything that would have otherwise required a parent's consent. Will Smith recounted the conversation to The Sun (A British paper), saying:

"He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh,"...“That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”

I don't know if they are really going to file the necessary paperwork to make it a reality, but apparently Will Smith understands his desire for freedom as a way to get out from under his admittedly large shadow. He compared it to their roles in the upcoming film, After Earth, and said:

"It’s very similar for Jaden and me — your father’s the biggest movie star in the world, and you’re struggling for your little piece of dignity in this extreme shadow," he explained.

Jaden's birthday is in July, so we'll see what happens.
