Who do you trust more: financial advisers; police officers; doctors; stylists/hairdressers; or spiritual advisers (Pastor, Preacher, etc.)? A survey of 1,500 black (adult) women was conducted, and the results were fairly surprising. And last week at the Bronner Brothers' Hair Show, I learned that black women tend to trust their stylists/hairdressers more than any of the other professions listed!
Most women spend a significant amount of time with their stylists through weekly or bi-weekly appointments over the course of years, and even decades. During those appointments the intimate details are being shared, advice is given, and bonds are formed. And you have to trust your stylish because s/he may be brandishing scissors and dangerous chemicals. You are trusting them to keep you beautiful!! Beyond that, your stylist may be your source of information and the impetus for activism.
As for the rest of the professions listed, unfortunately there are barriers to our trust. We have heard many stories of corruption, but beyond that, it is rare to form close relationships with them. They may know about some aspects of our lives, but not all. And there is often fear of reprimand or reprisal, confusion, and fear about being too frank...
I don't know the purpose of the survey; whether they were trying to find out from whom we would believe certain information, or just figuring out the beginnings of a marketing or health campaign, but it was intriguing. Of the professions listed, who do you trust most?
