I worte this post because I love this song, and it features a natural artist, the lovely Janelle Monae. I wouldn't say that this song was made with naturals in mind as the target demographic...but I took the opportunity to add the video and put up a few pictures of Ms. Monae anyway. And I got to update the post with her beautiful jumpsuit from the Met Gala over the weekend. She looks beautiful!

Do you like her uniform or would you prefer that she changed it up more often? Pro: It helps her stand out, in that she definitely won't be confused for another artist with a black and white color palette and a pompadour; it has inspired many a hairstyle including, in part, the Whadyasay? from my book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways ($5 on Amazon); she does a lot within her self-imposed color and style confines. My cons: I would find it limiting. In a world with so much color and SO many styles out there in the world, I don't ever want to be in such a small box creatively. 

In any event, Essence Magazine has invited Ms. Monae to participate in its Best in Black Beauty Awards where she is expected to present an award. The May 8th event is being hosted by celebrity stylist June Ambrose and Essence Beauty Director Corynne Corbett. Click here to read more about the award show.
