I Tried the Baggy Method...Sort Of

Sometimes I try things then try to figure out if I did them correctly. Same with the baggy method/greenhouse effect. I thought that the purpose of the technique(s) was to add and seal in moisture for the hair and scalp. I've since learned that the purpose is to stimulate growth, in part through protecting the ends from damage (with the plastic covering). I later read more about the actual methods by reading this article on Curlynikki.com. In any event, I tried my version because my hair and scalp have been really dry over the past week or so. I know why it's been this way. I haven't been drinking my 8 - 10 glasses of water per day. I also noticed last week that haven't been moisturizing my hair when keeping in a style for several days in a row (meaning I don't leave my hair out in the shower, run damp hands over it, then use a layer of oil - which is my normal hair routine). Additionally it had gotten cold in Georgia, and I've used my space heater a few times overnight. And I like to keep the heater pointed right at my head when I sleep.

All of that combined to leave me with something that I haven't seen in years - a flaky scalp!! Although I did a deep condition, and some co-washing over the past few weeks, my hair and my scalp just weren't doing what I wanted them to do. I'd heard of the baggy method and the greenhouse effect, but I'd never actually tried them...until two nights ago. I decided to dampen my hair and scalp, then apply my favorite oils for the season - a layer of coconut oil followed by a layer of Castor oil. I covered my hair with a plastic cap, then tied on my head tie and went to sleep. I kept my hair covered until I was ready to style it the next morning.
Although I did neither the baggy method, nor used the greenhouse effect (since I didn't wash and condition first, and applied oils to damp hair instead of allowing my body's own oils to moisturize my hair and scalp), when I uncovered my hair and scalp they seemed like they were good as new. My scalp was its normal color, it didn't feel dry and itchy, and no flakes came up when I did a light scratch....awwww finally! After two weeks of just being off, my scalp feels like my scalp.  And my hair looked shiny and felt soft. I could ask for nothing more. It's now Day 2, and my still looks and feels good.  I will count this experiment as a success. Have you tried the baggy method?
