Traveling requires some flexibility, and I keep that in mind when I'm trying to figure out my on the road exercise and hair routines. I've written a few posts about hair and travel, check them out (just type in travel under search). And now I'm sharing my exercise tips:
1. Be realistic when you pack. It is highly unlikely that you will follow your home exercise schedule when you travel, so pack 1-2 exercise outfits for a shorter trip and 3-4 for a week or more. I actually bring one bottom for every two tops, and a bar of laundry soap so I can wash my stuff as needed.
2. Remember that you move more on vacation than you do at home. It is likely that you'll get in 10,000 steps a day without even thinking about it. You'll be exploring new neighborhoods and enjoying new sites, walking to find new restaurants and bars, so you may not need any time on an elliptical machine. And you'll probably be wearing street clothes when you do. See #1.
3. Take advantage of your locale. If there is a beach - walk or run on the beach, enjoy kayaking or paddle boarding in your bathing suit. See #1. Take a biking tour, go skiing, ride a horse, go for a hike, or try whatever activities the locals enjoy. You'll likely get a good workout and learn something about your destination.
4. Have some exercises in mind that can be done in a gym or in your hotel room. My trainer, Phil of 48fitness.com, suggested Spartans. Here is a link to the video.
I will likely do a modified version of what I do at home in the mornings:
A. 100 jumping jacks
B. 50 squats
C. 50 curtsy squats
D. 50 mule kicks (25 each leg) w/crunch
E. 50 mountain climbers or 25 push-ups
F. You may wish to add 50 crunches - I do, occasionally.
Repeat.
5. Try to keep your hair in a protective styles for the majority of your trip. It will be less time consuming, and likely a lot easier to manage as you exercise.
I'm bringing flexible rollers, a couple of hats, most of the Oyen travel set, bobby pins and a sense of optimism.
