Milcah is a stylist and a woman that has been natural most of her life. She is once again living the loc'd life in Baltimore. Meet my newest Curlfriend:
Sassy! |
Why did you decide to go natural?
Well, most of my life I have been natural. I was not able to get a relaxer until I reached high school. When I had a relaxer in high school, I would keep it cut short or braided. I was curious but after that [experiment] I went back to my natural state. This was around 2000. I did the big chop. I didn’t hesitate to cut my hair off. Having the type of upbringing that I did, it was instilled in me to embrace who I am. Although I do recall a period after having my son in 2004 [when] I put a relaxer in my hair. I was getting frustrated with the locking process which made me relax it. However, that was short lived again because six months later I cut my hair off. I tried it again. Locking is a process that calls for patience.
What stage of life were you in when you went natural?
Older set of locks - pre-chop |
After my son turned a year old in 2004, I locked my hair again. I had my first set of locks for about 5 years and the most recent ones are about a little over two years old.
What has been the best compliment you've received on your natural hair?
You have beautiful locks! I believe I wear my locks well. Most people will tell me that too.
What is the one tip you would give a new natural?
Cute every day look... I like the larger locks. |
Well depending on how they are wearing it, they are beginning to lock their hair they should wash it, watch the products with bees wax and keep your hair oiled. It’s cleanliness of the hair that helps in the locking process. If they have recently cut off the relaxer, be patient and get to know your hair. Keep it moisturized, oiled and cleaned. Try different styles and embrace the natural you.
Do you feel like you are part of the natural hair community?
I feel like I am. Growing up I was around people who wore their hair natural. I still am. The fact that I am a natural hair stylist also makes me feel that way.
Has your natural hair has influenced other parts of your life?
I would say yes. As I stated above, I my upbringing influenced me. So I am around a lot of culture and I embrace my culture. I would have to say it’s a part of my lifestyle for me, from how I eat to how I dress at times and the products that I use on my body.
What are your top three hair products or tools?
I love it! |
I use Naani Naturals, Carol’s Daughter leave-in (liquid) conditioner for locks & other products for people with unlocked hair, and Jamaican Mango & Lime Products!
What is your go-to style?
My go-to-style is locks! It’s like once you lock your hair nothing else works… well for me that is.
