Trimming My Twists.....

You can still see the heat damage
I had a discussion over Facebook the other day about trimming my ends. The first three years I was natural I was pretty consistent about trimming my ends because I knew that it is part of a healthy hair routine. And I always enjoyed it because I used it as a time to press my hair and do a length check. So every 3-4 months, I would press it with my flat iron and trim my ends. Last year when I let someone else straighten it, I ended up with heat damage. Since then, I've trimmed my hair w/o straightening it first. These are the steps that I follow:

1. Make sure that my hair is fully dry. (Don't want to risk pulling hair out at the root);
2. Take pieces of hair, section by section (usually the size of a mini twist);
3.Pull the section as straight as possible (but be gentle); and
4.Clip some uniform amount of hair from the end. Last time I measured with my index finger, and just cut that amount (the width of my index finger) from the end of each section of hair.

This method has worked well for me, but since I miss doing my length checks on straight hair, I might press it (on VERY LOW HEAT) and return to doing it the old way - at least once a year.
