It's My Grandma's Birthday!

My Grandma is 85 today! Although I am sad that my Mom can only join in the festivities in spirit, I'm glad that her other children and 4 generations will be able to get together tonight to celebrate. It is a surprise!!!! But my Grandma doesn't read my blog, so I don't think that the secret will get out!

I just have to say that my Grandmother is an amazing woman. She came from Jamaica 45 years ago this week, and she worked hard (and learned a little bit about the immigration system) and brought my mom and aunt, and then my uncle a few years later. After she learned a little more, she sponsored her brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and regularly sent money and barrels to family and friends back home. I respect her for her strength and her generosity, her intelligence, confidence, her sense of adventure, and her willingness to try new things.

How many grandma's do you know that would hop in a helicopter, go down in a submarine, ride the Jurassic Park ride at Disney, or sneak into a sporting event (all after the age of 70)? I've done all of those things with my Grandma. In fact, I called her up last minute, and we rolled out to the casino on Monday! And she invited my Great Aunt Maisy because she'd never been. I look forward to seeing what else my Grandma will do, and to spending many more years with her as a living, breathing testimony of God's grace.

Oh and yes, she's natural! A few years ago she let the Wave Nouveau go, and she's been rocking her little 'fro ever since. She will tell you that she uses Dudley's as her shampoo/conditioner of choice, and that she will sometimes still use a little activator to make her hair soft.

Solange Needs a Break...

As you know, Solange has been everywhere this Summer. We've seen her at a rally for Trayvon Martin, at festivals, modeling, DJing, hanging with her boyfriend, at movie premieres, galas, traveling and performing. The Losing You singer has been making it look effortless, but she is human, and has now taken some steps to focus on some more important aspects of her life. So she's made a decision:

Family time: The singer has admitted that she wants to spend more time with eight-year-old Daniel as he settles into his new school
Family Time...

I am completely devastated to announce that I will be canceling my international festival dates for the Summer. I wish I could put in words how much of a difficult decision this was... but between moving part time to a new city, starting my son in a new school, and writing/ recording my new record...I really had to make the best decision for my mental/physical health and provide some stability for my family.
