Hello...Curlfriends is back! I featured blogger Kera Kinetik as my newest Curlfriend we're Facebook friends and I've been reading her blog and really enjoyed it, so I reached out to her and she accepted. Check her out below:
Why did you decide to go natural?
I had considered going natural for a few reasons. I had been contemplating cutting my relaxed hair to ear length and then shorter (big chop) but never got to that stage. I was going on a trip to Miami and was getting my very first sewn in weave (May 2009). I knew I had to have some hair to braid so I didn't cut it off. After wearing weaves for about two months or so, I decided I was going to let my perm grow out and not get a perm... ever again. In November 2009, I finally cut off the perm and never looked back. Overall, it's for the betterment of my health and scalp.
What stage of life were you in when you went natural (personally and or professionally) - student, working, in a relationship, parent?
At the time that I went natural, I was single, a mother of a beautiful five year old girl, working in corporate America and working on being a better me.
What's the best compliment you've received on your natural hair?
That I'm someone's hair crush. That made me truly blush.
Do you have a tip for new naturals?
Be patient. Your hair may not look like or grow like other naturals you encounter. I know you asked for one tip; however, I want to just share that what works for one MAY NOT work for another. All products are not created equal, nor is hair. So if there is a product that works well on someone but not on you, chuck it up, swap it out and find something new. Being natural and finding products that work well for YOU will definitely be trial and error.
Do you feel like you are part of the natural hair community?
Yes, I do feel as though I am part of the natural hair community. Not only do I interact in person with other naturals or those considering it, I also interact a lot on my FB page, Kinky Kinetik, with other naturals. It almost feels as if we are family and friends. We can all relate to one another on one 'natural' level or another.
Do you feel like your natural hair has influenced other parts of your life?
I can honestly say that at times, I feel much more confident. Overall I'm a healthy person although I can do better... and I am striving for that. Yes, I eat organic foods and avoid pork and beef; however, in looking at my body's health as a whole, I'm taking steps to further ensure that I am healthy, from nappy roots to my toes.
What are your top three hair products or tools?
My top three product and/or tools?!? Dang, only three? LoL. Ok, right now they are my fingers to detangle and my satin pillow case and scarf to keep my tresses in tact. I have too many products that I either like or love to name...
