In the United States there is a growing movement regarding natural hair. While there are still stereotypes associated with having natural hair, more and more people are wearing their "highly textured" hair to the offices, court rooms, classrooms, stores, movie and tv screens, and houses of worship of America. Not everyone is embracing the trend, but I don't think most Americans believe it to be a bar to entry into the ranks of the educated, employed, and socially acceptable.
According to an article focusing on Nigeria, there it is widely believed that wearing one's own hair in its natural state, "village hair", is unacceptable. Please read the article and let me know what you think. I wonder if they would have heard something different if they spoke to more naturals. Is it really that different from here in America? Madame Noire also wrote a post based on the article.
What about in other parts of the world? Please send me a message if you live outside of the US or are first generation American. I would love to start a new series to hear your natural hair stories.
