Let me start. My name is Naturally Twisted Hairstyles (a.k.a Allison) and I'm a product junkie. I don't know when it started or even how it started. One minute I only used products under $5 or made my own and I had a small rotation of useful products, next thing you know I'm purchasing new products at hair shows, and at Target, and Walmart, but I'm still making and using my own stuff too! I am spending $$$ on products, then barely using them! So even worse than being a product junkie, I am a product waster that hasn't stopped buying!
I know that I was happily using my favorites, mostly conditioners like Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle, some of the Suave Naturals, a few Herbal Essences, washing with Castille Soap and twisting with a combo of Cantu Shea Butter Conditioner and my own homemade shea/aloe mix. I even made the KimmayTube Leave-in Conditioner and my own spray moisturizer. Maybe it was when my Godmother gave me a bottle of Wen by Chaz Dean, or maybe it was because of all of the good things I heard about Shea Moisture, but I started branching out, and I liked it! I loved the smells and the textures, and I thought it (the Shea Moisture) did a good job of holding my twists....but I didn't think that it did a BETTER job than the cheaper conditioners and my homemade mix. It could be that I wanted to have my own stories about trying all of these products, and I wanted to see if I could find a potion to make my hair do amazing things. It might also be that because I have been trying to do less clothing and shoe shopping, and I've replaced one compulsion with another, cheaper alternative - HAIR PRODUCTS.
It is amazing how many products have jumped into my cart over the past couple of months. I know that when I start buying, it is difficult for me to stop. I noticed it at my last hair show where I started by buying a sample for myself, then I bought some products for other people, and I ended up with more than $60 of stuff for myself! I might not have really paid attention but for the fact that I was organizing my bathroom and realized that I had a section for oils, shampoos, conditioners, deep conditioners, samples, leave-ins, sprays, gels/muds/holding agents and ingredients to make my own products including aloe and shea butter. When I saw that I was about 5 deep in every category I recognized that I had developed a bad habit. So for now I am going to take a step back - evaluate which products I like best and try to keep my purchases to a minimum (right after I buy some more Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner).
