Last week I tweeted that I let the weekend pass without doing anything to my hair. It was true. I bunned up my last set of big twists and wore it like that for 3 or 4 days last week….I was happy because I remembered to tie it up at night, and the product I used to twist it kept my hair moisturized for the whole time. Saturday came and went with my hair in a neat bun and me in bed with one of those annoying summer colds. By Sunday night I no longer had the bun, and my cold had me fooled into thinking it had run its course.
Monday morning I knew three things: 1) my cold wasn’t gone; 2) my hair looked a crazy mess; and 3) I wasn’t making it to work in time for my meeting. I decided that I had to wash my hair and get out of the house ASAP, but my hair was so tangled, dry, and unruly that that the only thing I could do was wash some life into it. I didn’t have time to separate my hair into sections before washing, and just did a quick wash with my favorite soap, used the conditioner that was in the shower, and tried to hurry. T-shirts were used to get some of the moisture out, but I didn’t have time to get it dry. I then saturated it with coconut oil and used a folded over cloth headband to put it up in a ponytail. My hair was still wet when I got into work – and it actually dripped a little during the remainder of the meeting (and yes I was late). Despite the circumstances, I think it came out pretty well.
Wash-n-Go |
I haven’t been putting my hair in wash-n-gos in the last few years because I think of it as too unpredictable or too time consuming to be my go to style. When my hair was shorter I regularly washed, conditioned, then wore a puff or my hair in a wash-n-go with a headband. I knew what it would look like, and I liked it. Nowadays, I’ve heard of too many wash-n-gos that seem like a production and it has made me think that mine won’t look nice unless I have a routine that involves combing in a lot of products or drying it in a certain way. I felt like I just happened onto the right conditions for my wash-n-go to look decent, and that was a feeling that I didn’t enjoy. I don’t know if I will ever have a routine to make my wash-n-go look good or even if what I did last week will always result in a cute wash-n-go. I think I will spend some time in the next few months figuring it out…..What is your routine? Did it change as your hair got longer?
