This may sound crazy, but I really can say that I use combs as rarely as possible... It is always a fight, and I don't enjoy the process. The last time I attempted it was about 5 weeks ago. I had my twists in for a total of six weeks without a rest (I actually twisted them from loose hair, then three weeks later I retwisted my whole head section by section). I figured that it might be a good time to pull a comb through my hair and ensure that my new growth from the twists didn't begin to form locs. Besides I've always believed that combing was a necessary part of one's maintenance routine.
The actual "combing" was a somewhat scary experience. The hair that I could twist without incident fought my wide tooth comb. Every time I turned around - it was caught in another tangle. I struggled, my hair struggled, the comb struggled - and I seriously considered giving up. But I have never been a quitter! I took my damp hair, section by section, and I slowly worked my way up the strands from the tip to the root. As I was doing it, and pulling mounds of hair from my comb after every pass, I really questioned whether combing my hair was a good idea after all.
Prior to keeping my hair in two-strand twists the majority of the time, I combed my hair in the shower every time I washed it. I did it in sections, I held it, I did it from tip to root, I did it with conditioner in I did it after I finger detangled....and still seemed like I lost handfuls of hair whenever it was washed and combed. Now I keep my hair in two-strand twists and can only comb my hair when it is completely loose (every 4 to 8 weeks). I usually comb it damp, out of the shower and section by section. I still lose hair when I comb it, but I think that on average I lose less hair with my current routine.
I also avoid the comb by detangling my twists with my fingers whenever I re-twist, and I get out any knots that I encounter with my fingers. I lose very little hair this way. I do however still struggle with my enemy because although we fight, I think that it is the best way to prevent major tangles down the road.
