My twists have been in for 10 days now, and I haven't been very good about keeping them fresh. When I say fresh I mean moisturized and as fuzz free as possible. My recommendations are: keep your head tied at night or sleep on a satin pillowcase; co-wash your twists every week; shampoo/deep condition as needed; spritz them everyday; redo your edges as needed - (usually the very first row of twists from ear to ear at the week and a half mark); and finally, if you keep your twists in longer than a month, I think you should re-twist all of your hair section by section over the course of a few days to avoid any major knotting. With all that being said, I have to confess....
I am not someone that generally sleeps with a head tie or on a satin pillowcase (terrible, I know....) and I have REALLY bad about keeping my hair moisturized with this set of twists. I don't think that I've gotten my whole head wet yet, although I guess it hasn't turned into a crunchy mess yet because I have dampened my ends with my spritz (twice maybe?), but overall I could be doing MUCH better. I don't know why it has been such a problem for me....Generally, I keep my hair out while I shower so it soaks up some moisture through the steam, I tend to let water run through my twists once or twice a week, and I am usually good about dampening my twists with a spritz of whatever I've mixed together (right now it is rosewater and grapeseed oil) or at least running wet hands through them then following up with some coconut oil. Beyond that, I will usually co-wash my hair every week and even do a wash and condition with my twists in. As I said - that is my general routine, and I know that it works well for me.
I've already confessed that this time around I am not doing a good job of sleeping in a way that keeps my hair protected, and to tell you the truth - I can tell. I redid the very front section of twists the other day for a video demonstration (if I ever edit it I will put it up on my site http://twisthairstyles.blogspot.com/), but I hadn't done the entire front row until late last night. The edges that I didn't redo look tired, tired, tired. And overall, my hair just looks lifeless!
How am I promoting twists with mine looking old(ish)? I realized that I've done a lot of updos over the past few days, and (I hope) it has disguised the lack of care.... But I pledge that by the time I leave for work this morning, I will have freshly moisturized fuzz free twists!!!
