It's Those Smiths Again - Curls on the Street!

Although I could have sworn that I posted this last night, I guess I didn't! Trey Smith, Will Smith's oldest son, turned 21 and celebrated with his Dad, Step-mom and siblings in Las Vegas.

They started off with a family dinner, then Trey and Will made their way into the nightclub and rang in his actual birthday with Trey playing DJ at the midnight hour...

But now on to the important stuff - did you check out everyone's hair?

I love the new braids Jada! Jaden, who did your twists? And Trey is displaying his Curls on the Street!

Hair Update & It's My Sister's Birthday (Again)!!!

A year ago, exactly, I did a post on my sister, Nicola, in honor of her birthday. She had recently debuted her locs. Well it's that time of year again and her hair has grown, changed, and evolved over the past year...Her locs are growing and so have her styling options.

Last year's post was more about how she inspired me to learn how to style my hair when I was younger, but this year I decided to focus more on her hair and her routine. She is still my favorite [and only] big sister, and I still think she's pretty dope...but here's her hair story.

Brief hair history: My sister had relaxers from about the age of 10 until she was about 19. She had natural hair back when Lauryn Hill was first rocking an Afro, and was one of the first people I knew that ever tried to grow locs years and years ago.  If my memory serves, her hair took forever to loc, and I think she gave up.  Since then she has been relaxed, natural, big chopped, grown, braided, dyed, twa'd and many things in-between. It has now been about 13 months since she's become a loc-star...

How has your hair routine changed with locs versus without locs?

I don't do too much with it in terms of maintenance. I get it twisted (tightened) every other month, and I try not to get it immersed in water. Working out has made it challenging because it gets soaked, so that delays the locking process. It's different because it was kind of frustrating to work out with it [when it was loose and] natural because my twist outs would get loosened up and I would have to end up blow drying it, or if I had it loose, I would still have to blow dry and press it.

I use Sea Breeze astringent to clean my scalp because I don't want to wash it very often. So that's a big change, because I used to co-wash it every 3 days.

What are your favorite products?

I don't use very many products, I just occasionally oil my hair for a little sheen. I still co-wash with the same products I used before, just much less often. Fortunately I don't suffer from a dry scalp like I did before [when she wore her natural hair loose]. I've been trying to find the Jamaican Mango & Lime refreshing spray, but I may try to make my own with essential oils, water, and a carrier oil.

What is your maintenance routine?

If I wash it I will re-twist it (or tighten it) myself, but it isn't the same because I don't clip it up and separate it, I just twist with a little gel and sit under the dryer.

How much has your hair grown in the last year?

Well, I have tons of shrinkage and curly hair, so I can't really tell. Some pieces have grown more than others, but I know that it has all grown a lot because I can get it into a ponytail.

What are your favorite styles?

I did a lot of roller sets in the beginning but now I tend to pin up one side a lot, using a hair comb, or create a little faux-hawk, or do flat twists and pin them up and later have a curly twist-out, I do braid outs, and Bantu knot-outs.  I just had my hair done and my hair dresser (Renee at Anointed Hands of Glory in CT) does more intricate styles, and she added hair to form this bun. I think it shows the versatility of locs; you can do a lot of different styles. And now that I know that I can put my hair into ponytails, I have even more options, and I will likely do a two-ponytail variation in the future.

My only regret about locs is not doing it sooner. My Mother suggested it 4-5 years ago, but it took me until last year to do it.

Do you have any suggestions for those considering growing locs?

It's a commitment, and there is a period where you can't wash your hair at all. I think a lot of people get turned off at that point, but you still have the option of cleaning your scalp with astringents.

So cute! Reppin' for Jamaica & Guyana...

(Updated) Today's Hair - September 25th

When I twisted my hair on Sunday, I did not plan to do a twist out. I just wanted to clip my ends and leave my hair alone for a week or two. But when I started getting ready to go out on Monday night, I couldn't figure out what to do with my twists, so I reluctantly took them out.

But something unexpected happened - I fell in love with my own bomb-ass twist out!!!! My hair was soft, hydrated, springy, coily and defined in a way that my twistouts generally aren't.

What was different?

When I twisted my hair I did it believing that I needed the twists to last at least a week.

- Although they were much larger than I do my twists when I plan to wear them for a month-plus, I still did between 25-30 twists.

- I did them fairly tightly - again because I thought they needed to last.

- I used 5 layers of product on my dry hair (Alikay's Dulce, and BBD's oil, Eden Bodywork's Coconut Shea Leave-in Conditioner, Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie and my mix (pretty much in that order))  instead of just one or two.

- I took my twists out after about 30 hours instead of my usual week (flat twists) or a month (small twists). It was enough time for the twists to dry and set, but not so much time that my hair was no longer moisturized.

- I also tried to be careful as I untwisted. I used a little oil on my hands, and didn't separate the strands very much.

Day 3 - and I still love it.
UPDATE

So it is now Day 5 of this twist-out and it is holding up much better than anticipated. I don't pineapple and I don't tie down my hair, so this has been maintained pretty much through my satin pillowcase and a retwist of 6 or so twists in the front on night 2 (with a little water) and the flat twists this morning (with a little water and a little olive oil). I expect that when I take out todays twists, the front will hang down and form a bob-like style.

Clockwise from the upper left Monday - Thursday, with today in the middle.
Yes I took most of these in my car studio & home of Jean Jacket Productions.

New Video (Keek) - I took my flat-twists out!

I started with flat twists done on hair dampened by Obia Natural Haircare's Hydrating Spray and Moisture Cream. I followed it with my own home-made shea butter mix. I re-twisted after 3 days, re-dampening with the Hydrating Spray and sealing it with the shea butter mix. When I undid the twists, I used a mix of oils in order to reduce frizz. I'm not sure that I was completely successful, but I did like the overall look. Check out my Keek video below.

Product Review: Obia Natural Haircare

I did another brief video product review on Obia Natural Haircare's products. I purchased the sampler pack at the World Natural Hair Show, and decided to try the products on my loose natural hair. My hair was stretched and dry when I used a combination of the Curl Enhancing Custard, Curl  Hydration Spray, and Curl Moisture Cream. I first sprayed with the Hydration Spray, then did a layer of Curl Moisture Cream, then Custard to do a flat twist/two-strand twist combo on my hair.

Overall it felt moisturized, which is the purpose of both the spray and cream. I'm going to have to try the Curl Enhancing Custard while doing  a wash-n-go or to smooth down my edges, to see if I think it works as advertised.

Here are a few photos from the twisting and untwisting phase:

CURLFRIENDS: Sienna!

Meet Sienna (aka CurlyDemure)!  Check out her blog - I'm a fan! And subscribe to her channel on YouTube.

Why did you decide to go natural?

I decided to go natural when I was pregnant with my daughter 4 years ago. I was about to be a new Mom of a little girl and I figured what else is a better way to show a little girl self love by loving myself naturally.

What has been the best compliment you've received on your natural hair?

It makes me stand out.

What is the one tip you would give a new natural?

Have patience and love your hair regardless  of how frustrating it can be.

Do you feel like you are part of the natural hair community? I do!

Has your natural hair has influenced other parts of your life?

Healthy Eating and Well Being

CURLFRIENDS: Inna Rae!

Meet Inna Rae (eye-nah-ray). She's a poet and a singer that I met via Facebook. Check out her photos, her interview, and her site.
Why did you decide to go natural?

When I made a conscious decision to live out my natural, spiritual purpose in this lifetime, I realized that I couldn't do it without facing the absolute truth of who I am every day.  This included sporting my natural tresses.

What stage of life were you in when you went natural?

I was single, fresh out of college and as they say ‘had neither chick nor child’.  I worked as a high school English teacher when I faded my hair down.

What did your significant other say about your decision?
Gorgeous shot, gorgeous twist-out
I was dating and moving toward getting very serious with my now husband when I did this.  He loved it. He liked running his hands through it and grabbing it while we kiss :)  He still does.

What have been your favorite comments about your natural hair?

I always hear…”you can do that”…”you can wear that because you have a pretty face and a round head”.  But the best compliment I’ve heard was from my son who told me at age 7, “Mom, I like your wild hair”.

 What is your go-to style?

I fade it down every 6-7 years, but when it’s a little longer I where a basic fro, and when it’s way longer my go-to is always the twists.
Go-to style!

Do you feel like you are part of the natural hair community?
Not really.  Most of the women in my area wear weaves, wigs or perms.

Do you have a tip for a new natural?
I would tell someone who just went natural to keep their hands in their hair as often as they could.  This will get them used to the texture and will help them fall in love with it!

Has your natural hair influenced other parts of your life?

Not really.  Sometimes I get hazy looks when I am out and about... where others are not quite sure to make of my hair.  I realize that I am not making a particular statement by being who I am, so this doesn’t bug me.

On the flip side, I see a level of respect that is gained for making this move by others and I like that.  I see it as a reflection of my own self love and respect.

What are your top three hair products or tools?

Any great shampoo and conditioner that works for your grade of hair is essential.  Any oil, butter, and light gel for wet sets are great to have.  I also keep a big wide toothed comb for when my hair is long and a nice soft brush for my faded style.

Hey Look It's...Corinne Bailey Rae!

Singer, and personal hair crush, Corinne Bailey Rae was seen taking in the sights during London Fashion Week. She recently sat front row at the Spring 2013 show for Osman...but more importantly - look at her hair!!!!

I remember her U.S. debut, and thinking that she had a sweet voice and a cute little Afro. But over the years her hair has grown to be a force of nature. The singer's hair always looks thick, lush and well maintained. I think it is a chunky twist-out. What do you think?

If you'd like to find out more about her routine, I found an interview she did about her natural hair. Check it out here.

Look at that hair!

I'm No Longer a Twisted Sister...

My twists were quite shrunken this month -
probably because I trimmed my ends.
My twists are out!!!! I kept my hair in twists for the entire month of February. That isn't unusual since I tend to keep my twists in for about 5 weeks at a time. My twists were medium sized, and took me about 3 hours to complete. I've washed, deep conditioned, baggied, co-washed, oiled, and styled my hair, but since I re-did my edges a week in, I haven't retouched them since then. I've let my styles disguise whatever maintenance I may have neglected over the past few weeks. (Check out my e-book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways for styles - all of which look great on less than brand-new twists). Anyway I woke up in the middle of the night, and started untwisting. I liked the shape, so I'm leaving it as a twist-out. I'm going to do a few styles from my book on my loose hair over the next few days, then we'll see what happens....

My twist out - as of about 6 a.m.

Twist - Out....

I've had twists in continually for the last two months, and I wanted to give myself a break.  It took a few hours to get them out, but I did it! I love twists, and I love figuring out new styles for them every day (or couple of days)....there are some styles that I do that I don't post on my Facebook page  and that didn't make it into the book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways, but the point is that I wanted to do something different for a little while.

I took my loose hair and spritzed it with what I call my refreshing spray (grapeseed oil, rosewater, aloe vera juice, and tap water) and then followed up with a leave in conditioner.  I did 12 big two-strand twists and left them in. I pinned them up when I went out yesterday, slept on them last night, and undid them this morning after I put a little oil in them. I will re-doing at night, because I did large twists and didn't use enough product for them to hold the style for more than a day.  Here are my pictures:
