ABC - Another BAD Creation by @LovingYourHair

Can you say pretty? I can and it is pronounced Teyonah Parris. Last night at the Mad Men Season 7 premier party, Teyonah Parris looked gorgeous from head to toe. Her hair was in a fabulous updo by Felicia Leatherwood, aka @lovingyourhair on Instagram. Felicia described it as combination of "puff twist meets curls with a kriss cross Updo in the back." Whatever it was, it looked fabulous. Here are some photos:

And the whole look was beautiful:

I am a huge fan of the show, and I'm glad to see that Teyonah is taking part in Season 7. I wonder if her character will rock an Afro this year, or stick with the wigs/press-n-curls that she's worn for the past year or two. I'm hoping that she has a new look, and a larger part this season, but we'll see on April 13th when the show premiers on AMC!

OK SNL!!! So Now There Are Three....

Earlier this week we learned that SNL hired a new face for the "Not Ready for Primetime Players" - Sasheer Zamata. I posted a photos of her and her 'fro on Instagram, but I'll repost it here:

Here's another one, just because:

Here is a link to a little more background on Sasheer: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/sasheer-zamata-path-saturday-night-live-article-1.1569388. She is a graduate of UVA, and a performer with the Upright Citizen's Brigade, based in NYC. She was also part of a web series called, “Pursuit of Sexiness,” which Variety listed as one of its favorite web series of 2013. I will be spending this afternoon checking it out. And I hope that everyone tunes in on January 18th as Sasheer makes her debut on the long-running show. Drake will perform and serve as the musical guest. Go 'head Aubrey!

I've also just discovered that SNL has just hired two black women as writers for the show, LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones. Jones may look familiar to you, as she did to me, because she has had a Showtime special, "Problem Child", and was on an F/X show that I love, "The League". Both ladies are also stand-up comics.

While there hadn't been a "black female" cast member on the show in over six years, and only four in the show's history (if you count Sasheer), there hasn't been a black female writer in ..... I don't know, ever? The show has been on for 39 seasons, and I don't know if there have ever been any. WOW!  But congratulations to Jones, who apparently was a finalist for Zamata's spot, and Tookes on their new positions. I hope they love it, and that this new wave of color breathes new life into the show....

And I wonder how many wigs she is going to wear this year?!? Do you think SNL will hire a hairdresser too? I wonder if that has even crossed Lorne Michael's mind....

Solange Needs a Break...

As you know, Solange has been everywhere this Summer. We've seen her at a rally for Trayvon Martin, at festivals, modeling, DJing, hanging with her boyfriend, at movie premieres, galas, traveling and performing. The Losing You singer has been making it look effortless, but she is human, and has now taken some steps to focus on some more important aspects of her life. So she's made a decision:

Family time: The singer has admitted that she wants to spend more time with eight-year-old Daniel as he settles into his new school
Family Time...

I am completely devastated to announce that I will be canceling my international festival dates for the Summer. I wish I could put in words how much of a difficult decision this was... but between moving part time to a new city, starting my son in a new school, and writing/ recording my new record...I really had to make the best decision for my mental/physical health and provide some stability for my family.
she wrote in a recent statementshe wrote in a recent statement. Personally, I'm really impressed that she is taking this step back. Not everyone or every celebrity would prioritize in this way. I hope that she finds the time to regroup.

Chrisette Michele - New Album, New Video, New Perspective

Old vs. New (Source)
So Chrisette Michele is set for a springtime release of her fourth (4th!) album, Better. Click this link to see the video, "A Couple of Forevers" from the upcoming album. Chrisette Michele is sporting a new look...although the video showcases her shorter, blonder, faded haircut, it should look somewhat familiar if you saw the shots she released back in October.  The new look also includes some new tattoos and a piercing...Chrisette released the photo on the right, and asked her fans which look was better. I think you should do whatever makes you happy, and see seems happier with her short natural, so the new look got my vote.

The video was directed by Derick Blanks, the same man behind the alter-ego photography featured on Necole Bitchie and seen many other places. He's branched out, and did a great job!

Hey Look, Ziggy Wrote a Book!

Ziggy Marley, oldest son of Reggae legend Bob Marley, and father of six, has written a children's book! He was promoting his e-book entitled, I Love You Too, at the Grove in Los Angeles yesterday afternoon. He performed some of his hits, and read from the book which was based on the song "I Love You Too" from his 2009 album, Family Time.

Here he is with his youngest son, Abraham, as he prepares for the reading. Unfortunately, we didn't get a look at his famous locs....

Hair Envy? Teyonah Parris

I remember Teyonah Parris from one of my favorite shows, Mad Men. I saw her and thought that she was pretty, I also thought that it was a shame that she was wearing that wig (as in that particular wig that someone chose for her) on the show. But I figured it is a period show, and that is likely how black women were wearing their hair in the mid-1960's. Anyway - I had no idea about the majesty of  Ms. Parris' hair until this now iconic moment at the SAG Awards:

Ms. Felicia Leatherwood, @lovingyourhair on Twitter, is the amazing stylist that created this style. I believe that there are tutorials on this style on Essence.com and Weareonyx.com. She is also the woman behind Jill Scott's hair transformations. So you know that she is creative, and versatile, and imaginative, but I say all of this to say that I am always impressed with her work...But this post is supposed to be about Teyonah Parris, so let me get back to raving about her hair!

I saw this image this morning:

And I loved her slightly stretched 'fro with the pinned across bang. She looked great. Then I did a little more research. She did a really cute flat twist style that she found on YouTube. It looked liked this:

I really like her hair, and the way she changes it up! My motto is "New day, New 'do" (you can find a month's worth of  styles in my e-book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways available on Amazon) add it looks like she believes in it too! I hope that as we see more and more of her on TV and hopefully in movies and plays, that she brings her big hair, don't care attitude with her! And if you know her hair routine, let me know. I'm going to ask via Twitter, and see what happens....

Take This Survey

Hey Teamnatural!

Image via LaughinHyena.com
One of my friends asked me to take this survey and to post it to Facebook, and I decided to do one better by writing a blog post. I've filled it out, so I wanted to pass it on. Let's help create some scientific research...

The purpose of this research study is to explore the responses received by Black women who wear their hair naturally (not thermanlly straighten or chemically altered). The results of this study may build awareness about race based stigma and discrimination and contribute to our collective knowledge of the responses to Black women who wear their hair naturally.
There are direct benefits from this research study as it will provide research-based knowledge of how Black women's hairstyles impact their sociocultural experience, self-concept and possibily social mobility in regard to how they wear their hair.
