ABC - Another BAD Creation by @LovingYourHair

Can you say pretty? I can and it is pronounced Teyonah Parris. Last night at the Mad Men Season 7 premier party, Teyonah Parris looked gorgeous from head to toe. Her hair was in a fabulous updo by Felicia Leatherwood, aka @lovingyourhair on Instagram. Felicia described it as combination of "puff twist meets curls with a kriss cross Updo in the back." Whatever it was, it looked fabulous. Here are some photos:

And the whole look was beautiful:

 I am a huge fan of the show, and I'm glad to see that Teyonah is taking part in Season 7. I wonder if her character will rock an Afro this year, or stick with the wigs/press-n-curls that she's worn for the past year or two. I'm hoping that she has a new look, and a larger part this season, but we'll see on April 13th when the show premiers on AMC!

Hampton University - PLEASE STOP! Natural Hair in the Workplace....

Image via blackprofessionalwomen.com
While I agree that it is important to look professional, and possibly even conservative in certain workplaces, I do not agree that straightened hair is the only manifestation of the conservative or the professional. I feel that Hampton University is doing their students a disservice if they couch the issue as black and white: straight hair is good, anything else is bad. As black women with natural hair, there are myriad options for workplace hairstyles. Natural hair can be worn in a short or curly Afro, pulled back or up into buns, and out in twist-outs, in French braids, French twists, topknots or a number of other styles. In my opinion, the most important thing is that we appear "well-groomed" - and if that is something that you can't figure out, it doesn't matter if your hair is straightened or not.

I began my professional career with a twa over a decade ago, I've worked with many women with natural hair, and as far as I know, very few of them have ever experienced any problems based on their hair. I still wear my natural hair into the workplace, with it's natural texture, every day. Very few of my co-workers or superiors of other races have ever commented on my hair, at all, but if and when they do, their comments have always been positive. I have never felt that their respect for my opinion has ever been impacted by my choice of hairstyles, and I hope to never feel that way. Again, whether our hair is straight or in it's natural texture does not define professionalism.  There are a lot of people with crazy looking hair that will never go natural, but that doesn't mean that they look more professional than I do.

How dissimilar are these two women?
In all honesty, I really believe that the issue is: do we think that the powers that be (usually a person of another race) will hire us if we don't look as much like them as possible. For my two cents, the answer is, it depends. I truly believe that the biggest impediment to my being hired will NEVER be my hair. It could be my gender, it could be my race, it could be my color, it could be my qualifications, it could be my age, it could be my personality, it could be the way I present myself in the interview, it could be the cut or color or quality of my suit, it could be my makeup, or the sound of my voice - in other words there are too many other factors involved in the hiring process for me to change a piece of myself because of the possibility that this person takes such offense to my hairstyle, that he or she wouldn't want to work with me. And if that is the case, why would I want to work with them? And how will it ever change if we just conform to an idea of what we think others think?

And when it is a fellow black woman questioning our hair and our choices, it may be an opportunity for us and for her. Ask her why she feels that way, and why she wanted to comment. Maybe she thinks that she is helping you...maybe you can explain your position. Maybe it will spark an interesting and informative dialogue. Or maybe you'll just ask her to keep her opinion to herself....

Read the article, and please let me know what you think.

Hair for Today - New Day, New 'do!

I did something new today (well actually it started on Sunday, and I finally did what I planned to do, today)...I've been seeing directional flat twists with rollers that have ended up as really cute, curly, fluffy loose hair, and I figured that I would try it and see how it turned out.

So here it is as I intended...sorta:

The steps were as follows:

1. Working with wet hair (I washed it, and my hair was already detangled and in 4 large twists), coat hair with products of choice. I used the entire Oyen line, and I will write a review about it by tomorrow.

2. Separate hair into sections to flat-twist. Since my hair was already in the large twists, I decided that I would do 3 flat-twists per section, and end up with 12 flat-twists. I did not use a comb during this process, and instead used my fingers to separate each twist into 3 flat-twists.

3. Twist each each flat twist into the direction of your intended style, if you want the sides to go forward, twist in that direction. I usually flat-twist all of my hair toward the nape of my neck, so this was a change for me.

4. Double-strand or two-strand twist the ends of each flat-twist.

5. Roll the ends. I used flexible rollers. - I started this style on Sunday, but I didn't like the way my ends came out on Monday (the hair was only rolled for about 4 hours), so I didn't wear the style. This morning I dampened my ends, and sat under my dryer for about 40 minutes.

6. When hair is dry, undo the rollers, and with oiled hands, gently separate the twists from the ends to the roots.

You should end up with a fluffy, curly twist-out.

=========================================

Next time I will make fewer flat-twists. Maybe 8 instead of 12. I will also turn the ends into two separate double-strand or two-strand twists. If I did 8 flat-twists, I would end up with 16 twists to roll with rollers. For me, the flat twists were too small, so I ended up with crinkles instead of the spiral curls that I usually get with flat-twists. I also had too much hair in each double-strand twist, and I think that it prevented my hair from curling as much as it should have. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it didn't turn out how I imagined.

=========================================
AND this is how I styled my hair on Sunday, after I twisted my hair, but before I could dry and curl it.

I did kind of a milkmaid thing, where I linked all of the ends
together around my head, then I pinned up a bun in the back.
I received some unexpected compliments. And please excuse
my expression - I was late, and mad that my hair wasn't done.

This is how I wore my hair yesterday....

So this is how I wore my hair yesterday. I tried to cover up the
parts from the flat-twists by pulling the top back, and pinning it over the sections.
I had no expectations - so I was very pleased.

Photo Friday -Naturals of the Week (Oprah, Ms. Lauryn Hill's New Music, etc..) for 10/4

TGIF!!!!! Iam really starting to like Photo Fridays! I get to Insta-slk folks, and just post pictures that I like...natural hair is diverse, and I like it all, although I must be ready to color my hair because my eyes have been especially prone to liking colored hair over the past few weeks...Anyway, I thought that these ladies looked really cute, and were all saying something different with their natural hair.

Oprah looks like she lost some weight! She is shown leaving a hair salon
in California yesterday. She look's great, and I am loving the curls!
#CurlsontheStreet

Christina Milian was shown signing autogrpahs after leaving a
Dancing with the Stars rehearsal this week. Her curls are looking a little
tired, but hopefully a little TLC will bring them back to life!

And in other news Ms. Lauryn Hill's incarceration has ended. Here is a link to her new song on Sound Cloud called "Consumerism" that she released late last night...

@2fancyforya - I live the versatility! It's 5 different styles and it doesn't look
like she modified her texture at all - no twist outs, banding,  etc.
Just quick, cute styles that seem to fit her style & personality.

Weekend Hair - 9/27 - 9/30

Friday Night - Flat twists were out...

If you saw my updated post on Friday, you know how I wore my twist out throughout the week. Well, I still haven't washed my hair, but I have changed it twice since then. (New Day, New 'do!)... The first weekend style was kind of a vintage look, where I took the flat twists out and swooped the front into a textured bang, I then took the twist on the side and also pinned it down, kind of in a circle over my ear. I left the back out...

Friday night I flat twisted the ends down again and figured that I would do something with it on Saturday. Well Saturday morning I put the back in a ponytail holder and I pretty much tucked the ends of the flat twists in - and went. I exercised and ran errands, and by the time I got home, showered, napped, and got dressed - I was late to go out for an early dinner. I undid the twists, and basically twisted the loose hair up and into the ponytail in two sections - the one flat twist on the side, and the three or so from the front. It made the ponytail fuller, and I shifted all of the hair to the side, to give it a more festive look. I thought it came out pretty cute for a two-minute 'do...and I've pretty much left it like that since Saturday. It's been big hair, don't care ever since.

Here is another view of my hair, and a photo of my friends and I, Camille - in the middle, is wearing her natural hair pressed.

Vintage wash on the collage - I kind of like it
despite looking a little faded.
