Hair Inspiration: Hot Cross Bun & Instructions

This is a a re-post from TheBeautyDepartment.com  - I love buns and I love braids, so here is a style that incorporates both. Check it out, try it out, and so will I. 

1. Part your hair starting at the top of your crown and go down right behind your ears. Pull those pieces forward and save them for later.
2. Put all the hair in the back into a loose ponytail. This will allow the chignon shape to sit a little lower. Optional: you can make your ponytail higher/tighter if you want it up and off your neck.
3. Lightly tease the ponytail.
4. Wrap it into a low bun and pin using large bobby pins to make it really secure.
5. Do an inside-out french braid, starting at your hairline and continuing down behind your ear.
6. Braid the remaining hair all the way down and tie it off with a clear elastic.
7. Repeat the same steps on the other side.
8. Gently tug the braid apart. Start at the front hairline and lightly tug each individual loop/piece until you get down to the elastic. This will “fatten” up your braid and give it much more volume and texture. If layered pieces fall out, you can tuck them and spray them or just let them fall. Totally up to you.
9. Cross the two braids over each other just above the bun and secure them with some bobby pins.
10. Remove the clear elastics from the bottom of one braid and give a gentle but secure tease to the ends of the braid.
11. Wrap it under the bottom of the bun and secure it with a strong bobby pin.
12. Repeat on the other side.
13. Tuck the remaining hair under the bun and secure with another strong bobby pin.

Hair Inspiration - Style Instructions

I try to gain hairspiration wherever I can find it, and I must say that when I saw this on Pintrest, I fell in love!
I haven't tried it yet, but I will...likely on stretched, lightly pressed, or even twisted hair. It should work with locs also. I imagine that the steps would include the following:

1. Separate the hair into three sections going across from the right to the left side of the head. Make the
middle section about half the size of the other two sections. You may wish to put the sections into ponytail holders until you are ready to work with the hair in that section.

2. Braid the front section toward the middle of the head, stopping at the part, and letting any excess hang. Add a ponytail holder, or pin the hair down, again allowing the excess hair to hang.

3. Braid the back section from the base of the neck toward the middle of the head, again stopping at the part and adding a pin or ponytail holder and allowing the excess hair to hang.

4. Finally form a bun with the middle section of hair, and incorporating the excess hair from the front and back sections. If the bun is not as full as you desire, feel free to add hair into your bun, and use your hair to cover the addition.

It's My Sister's Birthday!

It's my sister's birthday!!! My (barely) older sister, Nicola, has been a hair inspiration my whole life. That has sometimes been a help, and sometimes a problem, but when I think back on the stories I realize that they are all pretty similar...

My sister did something to her hair that I thought was cool. I tried to copy it. I ended up looking crazy. I tried again, and I improved. These stories sometimes have an intervening step where I asked her to do it for  me or teach me, and she refused, but we won't dwell...this is a celebration!!!! I learned how to do extensions, trim my ends, and even transition into being natural because of her. She showed me that there are many many ways to wear your hair, and to try as many of them as you feel like trying. She has always been creative and amazing, and I've spent my whole life being impressed with her energy, determination, and style.

Thank you Nicola, for washing my hair for me that month we stayed in Texas, for giving me a faux hawk when I was 10, and for being such a wonderful sister and friend.

BTW, my sister is growing locs.  Here is one of the photos she sent me. I'll do updates as it grows.
