My Hair Last Week - Somewhat Inspired

So I posted this pic early last week and called it hair inspiration:

I was inspired. Not to try the exact style because I knew that I wouldn't wear it out, so I made modifications. I actually pulled out my rollers twice over the past week. The first iteration included me putting my hair in a ponytail then rolling the ends for an imagined curly bun. It turned into a 70's bouffant/prom hair, but I liked it. I allowed the drop curls to be kind of stacked into my bun. Here are some photos:

Again, not photogenic, but you get the idea.

Later I disturbed the curls a little and despite sweating it out I wore it like this:

I then decided to roll it all, although I used far fewer rollers than Ms. Dugas. I put it up in another bun. Here are the photos:

After the rollers, I had one more wave of inspiration - actually I just knew it was going to be another couple of bun days, so I changed it up a little by twisting all of the my ends into 5 large double-strand twists. I tucked them under and pinned them down. Here were the results:

The next day I undid the twists, pinned down the hair a little and did a little flat-twist bang.

Let me know what you think, and please forgive me for these photos. I'm going to start setting up my "real" camera, so I can put up decent photos on this blog....and if you would like to find a collection of easy (and cute) hairstyles, find my book, One Hairstyle, Thirty-one Ways, on Amazon.com.

Hair Inspiration: Fantastic in Four Flat-Twists!

Image via besthairstyleforall.com
You may recognize this style from a few weeks ago when I featured it as a trend in protective styling. Well I loved it then, and I love it now. It will be my new style, I just don't know if I'll try it tonight or next week. In any event, I think I can figure out all of the steps for creating this style.

1. Separate the hair into two sections. Split the hair across from ear to ear (or just in front of the ear). Put that hair into a ponytail.

2. Take the back section of hair and separate it into three even sections running from the nape of the neck to the crown of the head (vertically).

3. Take each of those three sections and form a large, loose flat-twist beginning at the nape of the neck and going toward the crown of the head.

4. Double-strand twist the ends of the flat-twists. Twist the ends together and pin them down, or form a braid and pin it down.( I will likely change this by pinning the twists when they reach the crown of my head, and later incorporate the loose ends into my bang...but we'll see)

5. In the front, and starting from one ear, begin forming a large, extremely loose flat-twist across the front of your head and toward your other ear. Double-twist any remaining hair and pin it behind your bang.

Yesterday's Hair - September 22nd!

I didn't do much of anything yesterday - although I started the day with high hopes. Once I realized that I was going to be too late to make it to church without missing pretty much everything, I decided to spend some time on my hair. It has been full of conditioner and olive oil since the middle of the week, so I wanted to wash it out and do something with it.

My hair needed a trim, and I needed a style, so I twisted my hair into big-ish sections and trimmed my hair as I went along. I wasn't going for a style, or even for even ends - it just needed a little love.

This is what I ended up with:

1. I mixed a shea butter based cream to twist my hair - I've put up a recipe in the past, but this one had shea butter, aloe vera gel, olive oil, and a touch of honey.

2. I put in a layer of oil (created by Beautiful Brown Baby Doll - I believe that it will be available for sale soon), some Eden's Bodyworks Coconut Shea Leave-in Conditioner, Alikay Naturals Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion,  my mix and Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie on each section, combed it through and trimmed my ends before twisting.- I know it is a lot of product, but that is just what I do when I twist my hair.

3. I separated my hair into about 25 twists, and did the edges with a combo flat-twist, two-strand twist so I could try to make sure I caught the shorter, stray pieces into each twist.

4. I then did a large French roll, and tied on a ribbon. I'm still participating in @Nappyfu's 30-day updo challenge, so I put it up.

Yesterday's Hair - September 11th

New Day, New 'do! I tried to do something new with my hair since I'd been keeping it bunned up for the past few days. I started off thinking that I was going to recreate the hair inspiration style from a few weeks ago. But after a few minutes of trying to French Braid the front, I realized that my edges were a little too fuzzy to actually see the braid clearly...and the beauty was in the braid. I modified the style to suit my hair today - I think with my hair pressed, I might be able to recreate it as it was originally intended. My parts were already in place, my hair was separated into three sections (parted from ear to ear with the middle section being slightly smaller than the front and back sections), so I decided to do flat twists in the front and back sections and incorporate them into a bun in the middle.

I split the front into three parts, left, right and center and flat twisted each section until I could two strand twist the ends.

I then braided the three ends together and added it to the hair in the second section.

I took the third section, parted it down the middle and formed two flat twists. Instead of twisting the hair all the way to the end, I incorporated the ends of the flat twist into the second section of hair.

I then formed a bun with the hair in the second section.

All done!
