ABC - Another BAD Creation by @LovingYourHair

Can you say pretty? I can and it is pronounced Teyonah Parris. Last night at the Mad Men Season 7 premier party, Teyonah Parris looked gorgeous from head to toe. Her hair was in a fabulous updo by Felicia Leatherwood, aka @lovingyourhair on Instagram. Felicia described it as combination of "puff twist meets curls with a kriss cross Updo in the back." Whatever it was, it looked fabulous. Here are some photos:

 I am a huge fan of the show, and I'm glad to see that Teyonah is taking part in Season 7. I wonder if her character will rock an Afro this year, or stick with the wigs/press-n-curls that she's worn for the past year or two. I'm hoping that she has a new look, and a larger part this season, but we'll see on April 13th when the show premiers on AMC!

Big Chop: Glee Actor Let's Go of His Locs!!!

Do you watch Glee? I did, and every once in a while I'll check in to see what's happening on the show. Anyway, this is about hair and not my TV habits. One of the characters on Glee, known as "Joe Hart" (or the "Christian character") has locs...or had locs. Sam Larsen just cut his hair in the middle of a photo shoot. Here are his before and after shots.

He said that he's been ready to change his look for the past couple of years, but hasn't been able to part with his hair. What do you think? Better, worse, same? via UK Daily Mail.

The Mane Event by Mega Growth

Mega Growth had a relaunching party on Thursday night at the King Plow Arts Center in Atlanta. They brought out local celebrities Porsha Stewart, some of the Married to Medicine cast, Andrea Kelly from Hollywood Exes, and imported Laz Alonso and Tatiana Ali. Radio Host Egypt, of V-103, and Jennifer Hudson's stylist also made appearances.

I got there so late that I only saw Laz Alonso by chance as he waited outside for his car (our very fuzzy pic is on Instagram), and the cast of Married to Medicine. I've only seen the show's previews, so I can't tell you who is in the photos (other than Andrea Kelly) but here is a photo.

Representatives from LaLa Vasquez's makeup line, and Social Box were there, and Mega Growth provided free massages, free hair consultations and mini-makeovers, gift bags with full-sized products which are supposed to be geared towards the relaxed and natural (I'll check it out), several full bars and an excellent assortment of desserts and hors d'oeuvres.

Tori Nichel - (Former) Fashion Star

While I was looking at the cast of the second season of NBC's Fashion Star last night, I noticed a big healthy Afro and the woman it was attached to! Turns out that Tori Nichel is a fashion designer with degrees from the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Design Program at Michigan State. While doing a little research, I learned that Tori has worked or designed for a wide range of labels in the fashion industry from Dana Buchman to Kenneth Cole, to Tibi, to Kmart, to her own Summer 2013 dress line available on her own site.

I also found an article capturing Tori's street style. She gave a brief history of her hair there....She has been wearing her hair in her signature Afro for about 9 years, and uses products like Organic Root Stimulator's Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion to keep her hair moisturized. And while she loves to use color, it seems that she uses makeup that is subtle and very pretty.

Tori describes her style as "tailored eclectic", and while her looks were enough to get her cast on the show, the buyers did not make any offers for her first set of designs. Fortunately she wasn't in danger of elimination, but I hope that Tori's star will start to shine a little brighter next week.

- Update and Spoiler Alert - After Tori's design's failed to garner any sales for the second week in a row, she was nominated for elimination by the coaches, and let go by the buyers. Tori will not be the next Fashion Star.

Hey Look It's...Solange on Letterman!

So our girl Solo had a moment to shine on the David Letterman show last night! She performed "Don't Let Me Down" in a cute navy blue and white polka dot ensemble.  It consisted of a cropped double-breasted jacket and an on-trend flared skirt with a t-strap white heel. She arrived in retro shades and a bright color combo of an orange (Proenza Shouler) coat paired with a canary yellow, dress, heels, and bag.

The only thing I didn't like was her hair! I'm all for changing it up and trying new styles, and I'm never going to tell you not to wig it up whenever you are in the mood, but I don't think this suits her. The shape is a little too full on the sides, and in my opinion, it takes away from her natural beauty...look and let me know what you think.

Girlfriends Reunited - At least for an afternoon...

Last week Essence held its 6th Annual Black Women in Hollywood awards luncheon and there ended up being a reunion of one of my favorite shows, Girlfriends! I can't believe that it went off the air 5 years ago!

I couldn't find photos of her Grammy arrival, but I did hear Brittany perform with Elton John and members of the Zac Brown Band, Mumford & Sons, Mavis Sstaples, and others. I only heard of the Alabama Shakes a few days ago, and I was blown away by the grittiness of her voice. The group was nominated for Best Rock Performance this year, but lost out to The Black Keys.

Prince Has Gone Natural?

I love Prince, and I have since I was a child. When I was a kid, I accepted his hair and fashion choices without question, because it was the '80's and people wore all kinds of things. When I got a little older, I realized that Prince was his own man, and would wear whatever he pleased, however he pleased. But now I must say that his latest look was a surprise.

He was on The View this morning....

    

You may recall what happened the last time Prince was on the show. I wonder if Sherri still thinks he's sexy?  What do you think?

Hey Look Its...Oprah!

Oprah has been on the cover of her own magazine for years now. We've watched thousands of hours of Oprah on television, and seen hundreds of photos. And hundreds of hair dos. Apparently, one thing we haven't seen is an O The Oprah Magazine cover with Oprah's natural (unstraightened) hair showing.

I know that a few years ago Oprah shared with her viewers that she had gone natural. Apparently she spends her vacations, weekends, and other down time "natural" but she hadn't let her wider audience know what her hair looks like (without a press) until now.

I'm glad she's done it, but I assumed, incorrectly, that she must have done this before. I was wrong. I guess I thought that if she's gone natural, and she walks around with natural hair, that it would be a logical step to have her natural hair on the cover.

In this time of debate about the professionalism and beauty of natural hair, is this is a big statement?  Do you think this will have an impact on the perception of natural hair (both inside and outside of the "natural" community)? One thing it has done is bring even more attention to the issue!

The modern re-make of Steel Magnolias is debuting on Lifetime on Sunday, October 7th at 9:00 p.m. Tune in to see Phylicia Rashad (Clarice), Alfre Woodard (Oiser), Condola Rashad (Shelby), Jill Scott (Truvy), and Adeporo Oduye (Annelle).  The ladies also did some promotional shots for the movie, so I added a few below:

The networks have been holding their upfronts  - or previews for the upcoming television season over the past few weeks. There are many new and interesting shows coming, and guess what?! Naturals have made it to prime time...I guess that's happened before, but it is nice to see that black women are being shown in more than one light, and all over network television.

Tempestt Bledsoe of the Cosby Show (a childhood favorite), is back on NBC with the show, Guys With Kids, where she co-stars as Anthony Anderson's (Gary) wife, Marny. The show premiers Wednesday, September 26th at 8:30 p.m. 



They have twins on the show!

Also, we saw some pictures of Kimberly Elise last week, when her new show, Bounce, was picked up by VH1 as its second scripted television show. It will also star Dean Cain (remember Lois & Clark?) and Charlotte Ross. It's about a professional dance team for the most popular basketball team in the league. Kimberly Elise plays a former "Devil Girl", whose daughter is now a current member of the squad. No date or time has been announced for the premier episode.

I also came across a photo for a new comedy, Emily Owens, M.D., about an intern's first year at a hospital and all of the cliques and politics and pressures, and saw that the cast included a natural. Her name is Kelly McCreary while her character, Tyra Granger, seems like she will play the best friend/sidekick role. And apparently, the young lady on the far right, Aja Naomi King (Cassandra Kopelson), plays her popular high school nemesis and fellow intern. The show will premier Tuesday, October 16th at 9:00 p.m.
